it was a dark and
stormy night
i looked out across the highway
the veins in my hand
pumping around the steering wheel
pumping the brakes
a blood clot, a traffic jam
so many blood cells
the tail lights of so many cars
one massive red river of stars
everyone has laughed and wept
with each other
i remember you in the rain
it wasn't particularly beautiful
or frightening
but for your shadow lifting off the ground
and beating itself into substance
life was so serious
so tragic
so dramatic
that i made a face
and it almost got stuck that way
but this time, my words cannot cradle
great truths
great triumphs
only a stretching sensation of waking up
and barely remembering the dream
as being something strange
but still something familiar
like meeting someone new
and hearing them say your name for the first time
i'm afraid to die
but i'll go first if you want me to
